The Wedding Feast of Cana
After all the excitement of Christmas and the New Year the Church like the rest of us returns to “Ordinary Time”. The priest is back wearing green vestments and we are all back to school, college and work. The novelty of the snow is long since gone and the comings and goings of everyday life have taken over. But yet each Sunday we return to the Lord and ask for his guidance in the week ahead. At times life may seem ordinary yet it remains absolutely exciting as we continue to get to know Jesus in a deeper and deeper way. As we go about our daily tasks the inner relationship we have with the Lord continues to make all things new and gives us a deeper appreciation of the mystery of life.
This week’s Gospel tells us of something at once ordinary and wonderful, “there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee”. Hundreds of weddings take place every year yet for the people being marred their wedding is not simply one among others it is very special and wonderful. Whilst at times we may feel lost in the midst of life and a face in the crowd, for God this is never the case. He loves each one of us personally and He wants each one of us to know this deeply. We may find it hard to understand how God can love everyone in the world, but that is not His problem. Ask any mother how she can personally love each of her children in a very singular way.
How can we discover this truth? Mary, the Mother of Jesus tells us. “Go to my son”. Whatever is on your mind bring it to him and he will turn your ordinary water into the wine of celebration. He can change our ordinary lives into extraordinary affairs as we journey with him. There is nothing ordinary about your relationship with the Lord. It is wonderful.
This New Year re-commit yourself to daily prayer, to spending time with the Lord. Be like the servants in this Sunday’s Gospel carry everything to Jesus and simply lay it before him and see what wonders he will work in your life.
