Jesus is for Today
It has been said that the devil’s favourite whisper is 'Tomorrow'. The devil has no fear of our greatest plans; he doesn’t fret when we decide to be holy; he doesn’t lose sleep at our resolve to convert. The devil does not worry in the face of our noble plans - as long as we put off starting until tomorrow.
In our Gospel for the thirteenth Sunday of the year Jesus’ strong resolve in taking the road to Jerusalem contrasts starkly with the priorities of those who would choose to follow Him. ‘First let me bury my father,’ ‘First let me say good bye to my family.’ The demands of Jesus in this Gospel may seem to be unreasonable, but the point being made is that following Jesus must always be our first priority.
All of us have dreams about how we would like to live our lives. Unfortunately, more often than not, our plans remain dreams because we never take the next step to turn our dreams into reality. This is doubly so with regard to our decision to follow Jesus. We are determined to pray; we are determined to convert; we are determined to be reconciled; but the devil whispers into our ear 'Tomorrow'! And so God’s plan for us often remains unfulfilled and unrealised.
The only certainty in life is now. Now is the only time that we are guaranteed. Today is ours. Tomorrow? We can never be certain.
Jesus is calling us to Him today. His desire for us is for today. The poet reminds us that the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry. The invitation to follow Jesus is for today. Don’t wait for tomorrow. Tomorrow never comes!
