Rome Sweet Home: Our Journey to Catholicism

Ignatius Press. 1993.

If you have EWTN you will have come across Scott Hahn. If you frequent religious bookstores you will have come across Scott Hahn. If you have been to any major Catholic event in the U.S. you will (more than likely) have come across Scott Hahn. He has been a busy man.  But before Hahn became one of the most recognised names in the Catholic world he was a prominent figure in an entirely different world - the world of evangelical Protestantism.

Like all conversion stories "Rome Sweet Home" is deeply personal. Unlike many conversion stories it does not limit itself to the personal. Scott Hahn's journey towards Catholicism was a drama enacted on a stage wider than that of his own soul. It drew in those around him, none more so than his wife Kimberly with whom he has co-authored this book. This dual perspective is one of the books most appealing qualities. Scott has written extensively on the theology of marriage and this book is a testament to a deepening awareness of God discovered within the marriage covenant. Their experiences are interwoven throughout the book and the voices of husband and wife chart a shared journey.

Scott's profound appreciation of Scripture provides a rich theological background. It was his single minded pursuit of the Protestant principle of sola scriptura that led him inexorably towards conversion. The deeper he delved into scripture the more the Bible seemed to support the Catholic position. Ironic? Maybe. But, as this book asserts time and time again, the Catholic faith is firmly rooted in scripture, a fact to which Scott's subsequent career testifies eloquently.

What is most endearing about the Hahns' account is its complete honesty, an honesty that implies a sincere trust in the good will of the reader. The style is relaxed and informal and so open that you have the sense of being privy to a private conversation. It is an intelligent, often humourous narrative which does not gloss over the difficulties and divisions they encountered in their quest for truth. This is not an abstract theological disquisition but a realistic, warts-and-all story of an ordinary American family. Scott and Kimberly's shared experience testifies powerfully to the splendour, beauty and richness of Faith discovered in the mystery of everyday family life.
